Florida, get ready... Toga Frosh & Mods on the way

Just a few hours until we load the bus for our Feb break journey to Orlando, FL. There are 54 kids and 7 adults heading south this year. This number includes a group of 10 kids from our neighboring club Shen Crew, and 2 kids from Sagamore/Manhasset. Included in the trip... Universal Studios (of course) and Cocoa Beach! I was amazed when I realized that we have been doing this trip to Orlando for over a decade now. While each trip is a little different, they all incorporate funny stories, memorable experiences, and unparalleled team bonding. Many of our coaches (now college graduates) can still recall many details from their Freshmen Florida trips back in the day. In case the kids don't call home enough, I will try to post a few updates to my blog (see the link on the right) - and maybe some pictures.

Varsity Girls Winter Dinner

Thanks to the restaurant FORNO for hosting our annual winter dinner for the Varsity girls. After hours on end in spandex, the girls were thrilled to dress up. Unfortunately it sometimes turns into a high heels competition... making me the shortest on the team! Anyway, the awards were silly and heartfelt, and the dinner was delicious.

February Break Adventures

For those new to SRA, Feb Break is one of the most exciting times for the youngest members of our Jr Competitive team. This coming Saturday we will be packing 54 middle school and freshmen rowers into a Coach bus for a LONG drive to Orlando, FL! Over the week long break SRA has scheduled many rows on the water at the Orlando Area Rowing Assoc. as well as a trip to Universal Studios and Cocoa Beach. We have done this trip for over a decade, and it always proves to be one of the most exciting trips of the year - for the kids on the trip and the parents at home :-)

SRA is preparing for the 2012 Rock and Row

Highlighted by the rock cover band Gravity, the 3rd annual Rock-and-Row will be held on Feb 10th at the Putnam Den in Saratoga at 7:00 PM. This event is for those age 21 and over. All SRA members, friends, family, and the public are invited to come share an evening out with community. The event is one of 3 fundraisers run by SRA each year. We hope to see you there. Toga varsity girls visit the Edge Halfmoon

No school on MLK day afforded the varsity girls time for a little team bonding workout. This morning we had the privilege of a private event at the new TheEdgeHalfmoon indoor rock gym. We have some pretty great climbers on our team! And, even 50 feet up, the courage remained (or at least the trust in their teammates to belay properly). Fun was had by all, there was even a little friendly competition between Alida and Raven. I think I knew it was time to go though when I was attempting a difficult (for me) bouldering move - after 4 unsuccessful attempts Caty H. said... "you just have to think "if I don't get it, I am going to fall and die""... I got it on the last attempt. After 2 hours of climbing we invaded the Halfmoon Diner and feasted for another hour (good thing too... I am not sure I could hold onto the steering wheel after that climbing).

Spring 2012 Underway!

Just a week into training for the 2012 spring season, things are looking good. Varsity practice is running smoothly, frosh and Mods are doing optional practices until they officially Start Feb 6th. There are 30 adults registered, and the SAT classes are full. The boathouse is a busy place this season. Lets keep it that way! If scheduling is our toughest task, that surely is a sign things are going well.

2012 Begins with NO SNOW!

Today marks the beginning of the 2012 season for SRA Juniors! After a long 2 month break from rowing, it is great to finally have the juniors back in the boathouse. I had fogotten the level of energy they bring to the building. For those of you who have not already registered, please be sure to Register ASAP. The early registration discount disappears on the 15th. Also, do not forget the parent meeting for the 7th-9th graders! Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7:00 at the boathouse

Give a Child a Christmas

We are hoping to get our list of children who still need gifts, but last Tuesday, with a little help from the guys at the Navy (who supplied the money) we were able to shop for tons of kids... What a great combination, Navy guys doing a great service to the community through their donations, teenage girls let loose in Target to shop with someone elses money, many children getting Christmas gifts they mighthave gone without otherwise. Win, Win, Win.
